COVID-19 ISLAND UPDATE
Currently, as of August 3, 2020, there is 209 cases in the Bay Islands. The quick action of closing the borders and shelter in place action back in March have greatly protected the people of Roatan! The administration on the island, Governor Dino Silvestri, has worked many long hours with the mainland government and local municipalities to allow the island of Roatan to open internally recently. They worked tireless hours in March organizing many repatriation flights to USA, Canada and Europeans. The administration has formed committees to help with bringing back Roatan natives, Hondurans and Residents. As of June 18, 2020, they have arranged for over 350 islanders to come home from cruise ships and mainland Honduras. Middle of July, it is expected to open the island and country of Honduras internally.
The good work of SOL Foundation and Roatan Animal Support have been collecting donations to help feed the islanders that are in need the most. When the country acted quickly to protect us all, it also left the hard working individuals that heavily depend on tourism (island guests and cruise ship passengers) without pay for many months.
We are hopeful that our slice of paradise stays healthy and safe during this pandemic as the rest of the world starts to open. We all look forward to seeing the tourist return!
UPDATES and CHARITY GROUPS:
WWW.COVID19ROATAN.COM. – Local updates and also have video updates on Governor’s Facebook.
https://themakeitcountfoundation.org/. – This foundation has been set up and is being overseen by a committee to spend the funds on large scale projects to help the island during the pandemic, including quarantine center aid.
SOL Foundation This foundation’s fearless leader, Kirsty Doig, has been helping deliver food 5 days a week to families in need all over Roatan. The foundation is collecting funds, buying in bulk, has a distribution center where volunteers daily are sorting, packing and delivering food. This is crucial for our island to stay safe and we all appreciate the hard work and the generous donations!
Rotan Animal Support The board members, Layle Stanton and Brittany Farrell, have worked equally as hard to feed and support Roatan’s fur family members! They have raised thousand of dollars and delivered hundreds of pounds of food for the animals in need alongside their humans in need. Any support would be greatly appreciated by the families that are having to choose to feed themselves or their pets.
